High above the clouds, ready to explore the world

A work trip — but not for me! – part 2

Landing on Kauai so late at night did not offer the beautiful scenery I had hoped for. But because of the lights of the small towns along the east end of the island, I could make out the peaks and valleys that the island is so famous for.

I was prepared for the Covid checks, and quickly made my way through the line to get checked by the National Guard members waiting for our flight. After grabbing my bag, I hopped the shuttle to the hotel and in 5 minutes, was standing at the entrance.

Chuck met me on the escalator down to the lobby and since I wasn’t part of the quarantine bubble, I was able to head directly to our room to check things out.

The view from the room was incredible, overlooking the pool with the beach, bay and mountains in the distance. I could tell the morning view would be amazing and was excited to have this as my “work view” for the next week.

The hotel is located in Lihue, and in a normal time, there are several restaurants and shops to walk to. Unfortunately due to Covid, most of the shops were closed and only a few of the restaurants were open. That’s ok, though since I managed to explore as much as I could around the hotel as possible.

Chuck was able to take one day off of work, so we rented a Jeep and drove around the southern part of the island, stopping at some cool spots we saw along the way. We didn’t have enough time to check out everything we wanted to see, but that’s ok since I know we’ll be back.

Even though he was working all day and I was putting in about 5 hours in the morning and another few in the afternoon, I made the most of being there and tried to get outside and breathe in the salt air as much as possible.

Work trips are typically rough, since you tend to work more on a site than at home. But it was awesome to be on a plane, mask and all, and know that an experience unlike any we’ve ever had before was on the other end of the flight.

I cannot wait to travel again and as much as I want a vacation, I’ll take a work trip as well!
