Someone posted on Twitter on Thursday that the city of New Orleans issued the mandatory stay at home order exactly 4 months ago (March 16). It was the day I got back from a 16 day trip to the Seattle area to cover the initial outbreak of coronavirus at a nursing home outside the city.
It feels so much longer.
One of the things that has gotten us through with a little sense of normalcy is the weekly wine and cheese tasting hosted by Commander’s Palace.
How does it work, you ask? Every Wednesday night, you taste 2 cheeses provided by St. James Cheese Company and 3 wines procured by Dan, the wine guy, at Commander’s. You order online the week before and Commander’s will deliver to you either the day before or day of the wines and cheese.
Each week is a different theme and while we haven’t been able to do all of the tastings, we’ve done 11 of the 16 offered so far. The themes vary, with some being all about the wine or cheese while others are more broad in appearance and they fit the wine and cheese into the theme. It’s quite fun to try and figure out what wines will go with the theme.
It’s been the most normal thing we’ve done since this world has changed. And while the Thursday after the events is always a struggle, it’s well worth it.
I know we all are craving something “normal” to do during this strange time. The adjustments we’ve had to make to our lives is drastic. Everyone is facing something new and challenging on a weekly, if not daily, basis. So to have that one thing to look forward to every week, or every other week right now, is helping get through the days that seem to never end.
If you are in New Orleans, and like wine and cheese, I highly recommend checking it out. If not, find that “thing” that you do weekly that’s normal. Something fun, something to take you out of your work mode, something to get you excited and something to get you out of your comfy clothes.
Trust me, it’s worth it.
