Friend time is necessary, even over video

I’m a social person and being around friends is always something I enjoy. I’ve been blessed to have a vast network of great people in my life, and during this crazy time of staying at home a lot more than what is reasonable for me, I find myself longing for just silly conversation and interaction with people.

I’ve done a few of the video calls with various friend groups but this week was finally able to catch up with the Bakery Gang. These are all former neighbors who became friends not long after I moved to New Orleans and they are the group that has kept me laughing and my spirits up through my entire time in the city.

On Monday night, we had “wine night”. We all picked out a bottle and did a description so that everyone could guess what we had. I have to admit, I absolutely suck at this game. I don’t know how to describe wine very well, even though I absolutely love it. Also, I can’t detect “hints of oak” or anything like that in the smell. It’s just hard for me. But this was a fun thing to do, so much so that we made it through 2 bottles of wine per couple!

As much as I want to work from home, it’s not so much the “work from home” part as it is the flexibility to go somewhere when I need or want to, venture out and work from a coffee shop to see new people and offer myself the option to work when it works for me, not for others. That’s not 100% feasible in this day and age but I’m working on it, and so far, I’m happy with the results.

But at the end of the day, I need to be around people. And while it’s not ideal, video calls with a group of friends is much better than nothing. And I am looking forward to the time we can all get together in person and do a real wine night.
