A Quiet New Orleans… and a little PTSD

New Orleans is quiet. It has been for about a week but as the days progress and more people take the “Stay Home” mandate more seriously, it gets to that eerie quiet I saw after Katrina.

Being here for work is vastly different than living here. And while so much of the post-Katrina days is not even close to what we are seeing now, the lack of people on the streets, cars on the roads and numerous closed businesses just brings me back to those days in September, nearly 15 years ago.

Talking to friends who lived here during that time, it’s obvious that these eerie empty streets are bringing back some bad memories. While homes aren’t flooded and power is still on, the stores being closed and groceries being out of essentials from time to time definitely bring up the PTSD symptoms that were so prevalent in the days and weeks after Katrina hit here. And while we know the stay home mandate will be lifted, the question of when is causing even more anxiety.

But we will soldier on, stay as far away from each other as possible and hopefully come out on the other end ready to enjoy each other’s company even more than before. Hang in there, New Orleans! And STAY HOME!
