High above the clouds, ready to explore the world

Saying goodbye is never easy

Heading home for Thanksgiving is something Chuck and I do every other year. We made the decision early on in our relationship that we would do Thanksgiving with just us most years and Christmas with my family every year. The last 6 years though, due to illness in our family, we’ve done the every other year in Memphis thing.

So this year, we headed to Memphis on Wednesday to see the family. However, this year was different as we knew my grandmother was not doing well. She had gone into the hospital the week before and wasn’t getting any better.

We went to Thanksgiving lunch with the family and then headed to the hospital to see my Gramma for a few minutes. Although she was completely out of it due to the pain meds and didn’t recognize me, I’m glad I went to see her. She died early Monday morning of natural causes.

Chuck and I headed back up I-55 on Thursday to say goodbye. The funeral was really nice and personal and we were able to grieve and also smile some about my Gramma’s life.

I’m thankful I got to spend so much time with my Gramma over the years. She was active in our lives and always made a point to check in on me after I moved away from the area 20 years ago.

So with that, we move on to the Christmas season, the first without my Gramma coming over to find out what presents we got and what we were up to in our lives. It won’t be easy but we are at peace knowing she’s in Heaven looking over us and enjoying her time there.
