I don’t know what it is, but everything about Mardi Gras makes me happy. Well, almost everything. The traffic does not. But luckily since we live so close to the parade route, it’s rare that I have to get out and face the traffic during peak times.
This year’s Mardi Gras season flew by. From January 6 and all the revelry involved in 12th night, through Chewbacchus and Krewe du Vieux and finally the parades the final two weekends leading to Fat Tuesday, Chuck and I made the most of it.
For the second year in a row, we kicked off the final two weekends by marching in Krewe of Cork. Dressed as wine jesters, we made the most of the day and the great weather with our friends. However, that day is intense and we were in bed early!!
We made it out to the day parades that Saturday, although the wind was so intense that we didn’t stay long. But it was fun watching everyone. On Sunday, we hit the parades along St. Charles Avenue at Avenue Pub. It was my first time watching parades there and it was so fun seeing them from the balcony angle.
The next week started on Wednesday as I rode in Krewe of Nyx. Although it rained a little before we rolled, the weather was significantly better than last year. We had a blast and it was fun seeing how many people came out and watched the full parade. Being 3 floats from the end, you never know how late people are going to stay out for a parade, but this one they did!
After working a full day on Thursday, I mustered up the energy to have dinner with Chuck and his boss and then headed out to see Babylon and Muses. It’s been a few years since I have seen those parades so I’m glad I made it out. Muses was really fun!
We skipped out on Friday’s parades in order to rest up for the weekend and boy am I glad we did! Between family in town and parties to hit, we made it out for all of the Saturday and Sunday parades. Although the rain storm on Sunday was no fun, it cleared out for Bacchus and we managed to catch some of the parade after hitting Bacchus Bash.
The season ended with Monday’s Proteus and Orpheus parades followed by Tuesday’s day of fun. After working for a few hours, I threw on the Mardi Gras dress and a wig and hit Zulu before meandering into the Quarter to see the sites. Meeting up with friends for our annual Grapevine wine day, Chuck and I managed to get some alone time and checked out the live music at Bombay Club before heading home and popping open some bubbly to toast away the season.
What a fun Mardi Gras and I’m already looking forward to next year. Or at least, after a few more weeks of good sleep!!
