Memorial Day weekend has traditionally been the start of a week at the beach for me. For the past 15 years or so, I’ve spent time in Destin around this time of year. And while we didn’t get the opportunity to go last year, we were able to carve out 3 days to head over to my favorite beach this year. Until that dang storm popped up in the Gulf.
Based on the projections of the storm, we made the decision to skip the beach since we didn’t want to chance getting stuck and missing out on some important work meetings. I was bummed but ended up having a really fun weekend.
Friday night went as planned, as Chuck and I met up with our friend, Troy, at the New Orleans Wine & Food Experience (NOWFE) grand tasting. We’ve done this event the past few years and were excited to hit it this year. The wines offered were really good and the food was, as always, outstanding. As an event planner, I did find the setup really curious as they had a lot of empty space in the convention center.

Saturday was the day we were supposed to drive over to the beach, but instead, we checked out the newest food hall in New Orleans, Pythian Market, during their soft opening. It’s a great place that certainly has more of a “New Orleans” flair than the other food halls in town (which I do like, by the way) and I forsee spending a lot more time there once they are fully up and running.

After some time spent on the pool deck reading, Chuck and I made our way to the Saturday Grand Tasting for NOWFE. We ended up leaving a bit early since a lot of the wine and food ran out fairly early. So we made our way through the Riverwalk since it was storming and then to The Steakhouse at Harrah’s for a little more wine and some dinner.
Sunday was another just super chill day. I got to spend more time on the deck, reading a book, and Chuck got caught up on his reading as well. That afternoon, we did some brewery hopping and ended up having a chill night at home.
We ended the long weekend doing some more reading, brewery hopping and finishing up with an early night on Monday.
As much as I would’ve loved to be at the beach, and am still in need of having the sand between my toes, I think a relaxing and fairly stress free weekend was super nice and worth it!
