When the Christmas present isn’t what you ordered

For Christmas this year, a majority of my gifts to family were photos from our wedding. Chuck and I picked out our favorites, had them printed and even created a book to give my parents and my grandmother that showcased the best pictures from the ceremony.

And that is where this typical Wallace tale begins. I ordered the 3 versions of the photo album and kept one at home. After going through it quite a few times, I knew it’d be something my parents and my grandmother would love. I gave my mom and dad theirs in the morning, and they loved it. We went through it a few times, talking about the different things we remembered and enjoyed about the ceremony.

At that point, my mom said my grandma would love it and I was excited for her to open their gifts. She wasn’t really sure what it was when she opened the book but I took the wrapping off to show her the photos. The cover had the napkin we made for our second line and when she opened the book, the first page showed “What happened over the winter”. Um, that wasn’t my first page. I thought that maybe Shutterfly made a mistake on the first page. But thumbing through the album, we realized they printed an entirely different album inside the cover!!!

Well, because it’s my family, my sister decided to read us the entire text of the book and boy, was it bizarre. The couple who were featured in the album told their “year” story, and it wasn’t all rainbows and ice cream.

Cue the tears: Gramma got such a kick out of the wrong book that she started crying from laughing so hard. She even texted me the next day and told me how it made her Christmas to just laugh.

I’m glad I gave her a gift I didn’t even realize was possible: pure, unfiltered laughter. But, now, I have to get a replacement book for my mom (who gave Gramma her copy) pretty soon!!

And that is a typical Wallace/Jones/now Davis – family Christmas.
