A couple of weeks ago, Chuck and I took off for Las Vegas. We’ve been talking about going there ever since we started dating, but life and other things have prevented us from heading West. And since we still haven’t had a chance to take our “real” honeymoon, we decided a few days in Vegas would be a great getaway and provide some fun for us.
Our 5 night trip started off well and we were able to walk around and do some fun sightseeing. Along the way, we hit up several bars and restaurants and found a few we really liked. Our dinners were outstanding and I even managed to squeeze in some pool time. All in all, we were having a fabulous time… until his work butted in.
Long story short, there were some issues at the hotel and his boss needed him to get back to NOLA asap. This was our last full day in town and he spent most of the morning in the room doing work. We were at lunch with some friends when he got the call and we had to frantically find a flight back to New Orleans that evening. I was ticked. And severely unhappy as his work is partly the reason we’ve been unable to take our honeymoon. To say I was over his job is a very large understatement.
So in the midst of trying to get him back to work by Thursday morning (our original last day in Vegas), my friends invited me to go to their vacation house in Mexico, just south of San Diego. Chuck thought I’d have fun and it’d be better than me stewing at home while he is working. So we booked a flight to San Diego and ran back to the hotel for both of us to pack.
We made it to the airport and through security in plenty of time and were able to hang out a little before our flights. So I went West, and he went East.
The trip to Mexico turned out to be a lot of fun and very interesting. I was able to do some things that I wasn’t expecting, like eat fresh lobster caught that morning, check out some villages and meet some new people. I also got a chance to hit up Mexican wine country. What a unique and interesting experience! The wines we tasted were really good and we even had an amazing 6 course meal in the midst of a vineyard. It was really special and the only thing that would’ve made it better was to have Chuck there.
Hopefully his work will settle down and we’ll be able to do an actual honeymoon soon. But I realized that even in the short trips that don’t go as planned, there is fun and adventure to be had. And that was something I had forgotten over the years. My planning abilities are good, but the fun and joy of travel is to just wait and see what happens and go with the flow.
