Time away from home, work, life’s daily activities and more is always something that is necessary, in my opinion. When I lived in New York (and had less money but a lot more vacation time), I always tried to get away on a quarterly basis. While some of that involved visiting my family in the Memphis area, a majority of it was doing some type of trip that did not involve work.
I’ve not been as diligent about it since I moved to New Orleans. One of the biggest reasons is that there is always something fun going on in the city year round. Almost every weekend is a festival, event or something else that Chuck and I enjoy doing.
However, we do need to get away from the hustle and bustle of home life and decompress. This past weekend definitely saw us doing that and more.
After a half day spent in Ft. Lauderdale that saw me taking a stroll along the beach while Chuck did some work calls, we made our way to Key Largo and the Playa Largo resort. I’d never been to the Keys before and although Chuck had, it had been over 10 years since his last trip down Highway 1.
The resort was tailor made for relaxation, from several restaurants and bars on site, the pool area with great loungers, the beach with hammocks set up along the bay and the on-site spa. This was luxury that I was thrilled to partake in.
While some people want to go, go, go while on vacation, I do not. I’m fine with an excursion or two like dinner or drinks out, but all I want to do is read a book and relax outside. I prefer to get a little color but tend to stay in the shade as much as possible with a few jaunts into the water to cool off. And that’s exactly what I did.
The only day it was super cloudy, and rained just a touch, we made our way a few miles down to the next key to try out a couple of the local breweries. They were really cool and not only did we do a few tastings, but also walked away with a glass and some t-shirts from both.
The worst part of the trip was the drive back up to Ft. Lauderdale to catch our flight home. As usual, I didn’t want to leave so soon. But it just wet my appetite for our next adventure outside of New Orleans.
