A week ago, I woke up ridiculously early for a Saturday and hopped on my bike to ride through New Orleans for an unusual tour of the city. For the first annual Bike the Big Easy, streets were closed and over 1400 people on bicycles trekked through the Quarter, CBD and down St. Charles in impressive fashion. The weather was perfect, with the exception of a headwind that was more brutal than it appeared. And the best part was that anyone could ride. It wasn’t a race, but a ride, with speeds capped at 18 miles an hour on the high end and 6 mph on the low. I saw people of all ages and all shapes and sizes riding. It was refreshing and even better for me as I rode with my uncle and my man. The best part was seeing parts of the city I’ve only seen by car. It was one of those perfect New Orleans Saturdays.
