Anyone who knows me, knows that I’m a passionate football fan. Actually, it’s more like above-average passion. I’ll admit it. I want my teams to win. Always.
However, I’m also realistic and know that some (read: most) years, it’s just not in the cards to win every game. So I appreciate it when my team plays until the final whistle and doesn’t give up. I also support them and try to keep the focus on my team.
Flashback a few weeks ago, when Alabama lost to Ole Miss. I was bummed. But I also knew that Bama wasn’t going to go the season undefeated. And to be honest, losing this game wasn’t a shock to me. So I went about my weekend, hitting the sofa at my friend’s place in NYC for a few hours of sleep before catching an 8a flight to NOLA and heading straight to the Superdome to watch the Saints first home game. (PS-they lost. Bummed lasted all weekend)
When I finally logged into Facebook later that evening, I went into ticked off mode. The vitriol and pure lack of class by the numerous Ole Miss fans and wanna be fans on my Facebook feed sent me into over drive. I know about 40% of them are true fans–the ones that went to school solely to support the Rebels, the ones who go to the games while donating to the alumni association, the ones who proudly cheer on their team during a losing season. I am fine with a little of their trash talking.
But the other 60%? I highly doubt any of them have given a dime to the school. If they even bother to drive the hour to Oxford, they buy their tickets off friends if they are lucky, but more likely from the random guy standing outside the stadium with an “I need tickets” sign around his neck and 20 various tickets in his pocket that he paid $40 for and is selling for $100. Those are the people who just set me off.
I’m not blind. I grew up in the South and went to Alabama. I know that Ole Miss fans aren’t the only ones like that. Trust me, every SEC school has that contingent. A pretty large one for most, if not all, of the schools. It’s embarrassing, to be honest, and a little crazy. I don’t understand why people are like that but I’ve lived it for years. And for any fan of a SEC school to act like another fan base is worse than theirs, well, they are just living in denial, crazy world, or something else.
It’s amazing to me how much people hide behind their computers when criticizing and making fun of people/teams/etc (she types from her own computer. I realize the hypocrisy here). And while I’d love to say something to each and every person who acts a fool on social media, I also know that it’s a lost cause.
While I wanted to post this in the week post-Alabama/Ole Miss game, I did what a wise person once told me: save draft. It’s now a bit more tame, a lot less ranting.
And I learned something too, how to “Unfollow” people on Facebook. It’s been enlightening and I’ve clicked that button a lot in the last few weeks.
My next post will go back to being about my fun and fabulous New Orleans life, but I had to get this off my chest. I mean, what are blogs for if you can’t vent every now and then?
And by the way, I’m Roll Tide til I die:
